Picardy Wines New Releases

The Pannell family’s notes on the 2008 vintage:

The weather in 2008 was very kind to our grapes. It was predominantly dry, with near perfect ripening temperatures, resulting in small berries. This is exactly what we were looking for to achieve a good skin to juice ratio in the fermenters for our red wines. Vigorous crop thinning helped us achieve the desired yield per hectare as well as flavours and baumé levels (the measure of sugar content).

We believe that 2008 wines from Picardy are the best wines for each variety that we have released so far.

Pemberton is one of Australia's newer wine regions, located in the South West of Western Australia. The first grapes were planted in 1977, with commercial plantings expanding throughout the 1980s.

Pemberton is an excellent region for viticulture because of its combination of southern latitude and high altitude, which create a relatively cool climate. This provides the grapes with a sustained ripening period.

Pemberton's loamy, gravel soils and cool climate will prove it to be one of the best regions in Australia for the growing of pinot noir and chardonnay. The region is also well suited to the production of refined Bordeaux style wines.

Wines on show:

  • Sauvignon Blanc 2010
  • Chardonnay 2008
  • Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Domaine Hervé et Anné Sigaut is nestled just outside the village of Chambolle-Musigny where the Sigaut family have been making wine for generations. Most of their grapes come from their holdings only a stones throw from their home. The estate totals 17 acres, including spectacular old-vine parcels of Chambolle 1er Crus Les Fuées, Les Sentiers and Les Noirots – many of which are ploughed by horse. Hervé follows the lunar calendar when determining the timing of most of the activities in the vineyard.

Hervé uses “Lutte Raisonee”, a method whereby he only uses chemical control of pests when absolutely necessary. He prefers a minimalist approach to winemaking; interfering with the wine as little as possible during fermentation. The winemaking facility was re-built in 2003/2004, eliminating all mechanical pumping. The winery is gravity fed in all phases of the winemaking process. A sorting table was put in place and all stainless-steel fermentation tanks are fully temperature controlled. Anne and Hervé are striving for wines of greater fruit expression and they explained to us that each vintage sees them reaching their desired end. Their desire is for wines that speak of place rather than oak so that the end use of new oak is kept to less than 40%.

All of Hervé and Anne’s wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

We are complementing these fine red burgundies with a Macon and Pouilly Fuisse from “une petite propriete”, Domaine Vessigaud.

Great stuff indeed!

On tasting this Saturday, August 28, 2010

In-Store

2pm – 6pm

Burgundy Bonanza

Domaine Vessigaud Macon Charnay Bois Marechal 2008

Domaine Vessigaud Pouilly Fuisse Vielles Vignes 2008

Domaine Sigaut Chambolle Musigny 2007

A very Chambolle-like nose of high-toned, ripe and elegant red berry fruit is nuanced by subtle limestone hints that are picked up by the precise, pure and detailed barely middle weight flavours that possess good energy and punch. (86-88)/2010

Domaine Sigaut Chambolle Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru 2007

A slightly riper and more complex if more deeply pitched nose of red berry, violet, rose petal and wet stone trimmed in a deft touch of wood spice dissolves into more complex and more powerful flavours that possess an attractive, even seductive mouth feel and very good length. (89-91)/2012

Domaine Sigaut Chambolle Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru 2007

A wonderfully pure wet stone suffused nose of both red currant and blue berry fruit with just a whiff of menthol in the background complements the delicious, precise, intense and almost delicate flavours that are on the lighter side but the minerality gives a sense of lift to the sappy tension filled finish. Lovely and understated and this should drink well early. (89–91)/2012

Domaine Sigaut Morey St Denis Les Millandes 2007

… there is good freshness and energy to the pure, minerally and nicely balanced and tautly muscled middle weight flavours that possess a bit more mid-palate grip and concentration … all wrapped in a rustic and edgy finish. (87-89)/2012
