Weemala is both an aboriginal word for ‘good view’ and the name of our vineyard in the Central Ranges of NSW. As the birds that live here can testify, it does have a bloody good view. Right now you’ve got a pretty good view of our Pinot Gris. The 2008 Pinot Gris is white gold in colour, and has aromas of fresh pear, mandarin and melon with spicy quince, and lemon flavours before a long finish.
VINEYARD
The Pinot Gris grapes for this dry white wine were harvested at 12.6° and 13.6° Baumé, on the 21st February and 14th March 2008. Grown at elevations of 650 metres and 1,000 metres on the slopes of Mount Canobolas at Orange. Considerable rain in February complicated the 2008 vintage. However dry and windy conditions in March dried the vines sufficiently to avoid disease and ripen nicely. The mild temperatures resulted in a very good vintage for the Orange region, particularly for aromatic whites. The vines have been trained on a VSP trellis system.
WINEMAKING
After picking and crushing the grapes in the cool of the night, the juice was clarified by cold settling and racking. 25% of the wine was processed separately utilising total oxidation of the juice pre-ferment. Both parcels were inoculated with QA23 yeast and the fermentations took place over 11 days in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures. Malo-lactic fermentation was inhibited. The wine was lightly filtered before bottling.
