It comes from Spain's most arid wine district, Jumilla, with a scant 8 inches per year, located at extreme elevation on sparsely vegetated, rocky soils. A lifelong Jumilla wine trade personality, AgapitoRico developed his own vineyards in the area from the early 1980?s, following detailed climate and soil studies. Complementing existing old-vine Monastrell (Mourvèdre) are more recent plantings of Merlot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Agapito revolutionized Jumilla with his fresh, concentrated young Carchelo reds beginning with the 1993 vintage.

Tasting Notes: Strong dark colour it smells of cherry jam, boysenberry, pepper, baked earth and dried herbs. On the palate medium to full bodied with a mix of sweet jammy fruit and more spicy earthy flavours with a certain bitter dried herb edge adding interest (at least for me). A consistent staff pick.
